Congratulations to AFC Corsham U13 Jaguars who, on Saturday 13th May, were crowned the Mid Wilts U13 League Cup champions in a hard-fought match beating Witham Friary 2-1 at Chippenham Town FC.
The U13 Jags came from a goal behind, scoring twice in the second half to lift the trophy with goals from Reece and Shae.
Witham started the match on the front foot, breaking quickly and effectively and had a number of early attacks that were dealt with by the AFC Corsham defence. In the instances where Witham broke through the defence Callum was on hand, in goal, to deal with the danger.
Witham broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when good play from them opened up the AFC Corsham defence and the resultant shot was dispatched. AFC Corsham could probably feel a bit hard done by, but they kept their heads up and carried on implementing the game plan that was set out at the start of the match. A free kick from around 30 yards out was narrowly missed by Jake, who hit the post. Further attacks from Witham were, in the majority dealt with, but there was a heart in mouth moment when the ball rebounded off the AFC Corsham bar. Just before the half time whistle good play down the right-hand side and a pinpoint cross saw Theo shoot straight at the Witham keeper showing positive signs of our intention to push on.
HT AFC Corsham 0 – 1 Witham Friary
After a slight reshuffle AFC Corsham got into a good rhythm, building confidence and trying to stretch the Witham defence with Mjay and Shae leading the line. A number of chances went begging and there was a feeling that AFC Corsham were in the ascendency, dominating the midfield and dealing with everything that Witham had in attack.
10 minutes into the second half good play from Mjay down the left-hand side saw him pull the ball back to the edge of the box where Reece was waiting to hit a half volley into the bottom corner of the Witham goal giving us the equaliser that we deserved. 1-1
AFC Corsham continued to press and with 20 minutes remaining a looping cross from Jake from the left managed to find it’s way to Shae who was on hand to head the ball into the Witham goal. AFC Corsham had the lead. 2-1
The next 15 minutes was fairly even with both teams cancelling each other out and limited chances for both sides. With 5 minutes remaining Witham threw everything at AFC Corsham and Callum was called into action making some outstanding saves to keep the scoreline at 2-1.
FT AFC Corsham 2 – 1 Witham Friary
Full credit to both teams in what was a hard-fought match worthy of a cup final. Each and every AFC Corsham player was outstanding and really shows the resilience that this group of lads have. Beating Witham Friary is no easy feat; they have dominated the league this year with a perfect record of 16 wins from 16 games, they have won the Somerset County Cup and were unbeaten in 30 games going into this match. We knew it was going to be tough, but the boys implemented the game plan to perfection and shows what they’re capable of.
